Manly Typesetters

Oh, to walk through the aisles of this vast government office and watch these typesetters at work. My cold fingers begin to crack just thinking about it. From a Harris & Ewing glass negative, Washington, circa 1910. Purchase a hi-def image of The Typesetters at Shorpy.

  1. Wonderful seeing these pictures. My father worked in these same rooms 50 years late as a linotype operator at the GPO. I remember going there when they would let the familes come at Christmas and see the big model train set up in the auditorium. Dad took us upstairs and made our names in hot lead for us. There used to be salt tablet dispensers on the columns in the typsetting room.

    1. Thank you for sharing your nice memories of your visits to the GPO. May I ask what the salt tablet dispensers were for?
